Wanaka v Clyde

At Wanaka on Sunday afternoon, 27 July, was the annual Wanaka v Clyde match.

Simon Nyhof organised a triples tournament of 3 games of 8 ends, with 4 teams representing each Club. Close games were the order of the day, and after two rounds Wanaka was leading by 114 points to  110 points. But Clyde won three games in the last round and thus won the trophy by a convincing 188 points to 148 points.

Simon presented the trophy to Lynn McArthur from Clyde. Lynn thanked her teams and expressed gratitude to the Wanaka club for hosting the event and for the excellent catering.

Exciting Times for the Aspiring Village bowlers and Aspiring aspiring bowlers

Spiel from Steph McNab - Aspiring Village:

On June 12th, we were thrilled to open our brand-new Bowling Green at Aspiring Village. Residents and visitors gathered to celebrate the new facility over mulled wine, fancy nibbles & of course the cutting of the ribbon by our 100-year-old resident and in house bowling professional Henry Thayer.

Our residents have created their own village bowls association and run the management of the green. It's a fabulous addition to the village and it really highlights the community and lifestyle we have to offer.

Town v Village

The annual contest for the John Barton Trophy between Town and the Village was played on Wednesday afternoon, 23 July, with a full field of teams.

The Village teams were selected by Jim Feehly and the Town teams were selected by Jim Cowie with assistance from Arthur Sutherland.

Close games were played in a friendly spirit with Town emerging victorious, having lost to the Village in 2023 and 2024.

Jim Feehly presented the trophy to Fin McRae on behalf of the victorious teams. A delicious afternoon tea was supplied by the Town players and was enjoyed by all.

Cold Hands?

Playing in cold conditions is particularly challenging if you get cold hands. No matter how much you are wearing it is difficult to get your speed / weight (same thing) particularly on short ends.

Women, have you noticed that most of the men's hands you shake on a cold day are really warm? I asked the internet why this was.

Biological differences between men and women

At around the same body weight, women tend to have less muscle to generate heat. Women also have more fat between the skin and the muscles, so the skin feels colder, as it’s slightly further away from blood vessels.

Women also tend to have a lower metabolic rate than men, which reduces heat production capacity during cold exposure, making women more prone to feeling cold as the temperature drops.

An essential item to think of including with your jacket in your bowls bag for the unexpected cold day could be these hand warmers 2 for $4 from a pharmacy. Cheaper in other shops but frequently sold out.

Ensure you are wearing pants/trousers with pockets. Look after your bowling hand and keep it tucked up and cosy.
