Wanaka Women continue their success on the Central Otago Scene

(Sorry: Wanaka Sun Promised to print!)

Rae Hammond and Raewyn Hall had a very successful day at Alexandra Bowling Club on Sunday 24 November.  They won the Central Otago Arvida Country Club 1-5 pairs. (Playing 5 years and under) The pair won over an Omakau team, Julie Jeffery and Pauline Huddleston 11-6 in the final. Hammond and Hall were unbeaten in the qualifiers. It was not the first win for Hall who won two years previously and Rae Hammond was Runner Up last year.

Also in the competition were Helen Allison and (rookie) Suzanne Ewing who had very close results to both the winners and runners up in the qualifiers and nearly made the semi finals.

In the men's section at the Alexandra District Club Ross Niles and Ross Hammond just missed out on qualifying with three wins in their qualifiers but needing to finish in the top four on points countback.

November Corporate Events

Hi, it is very pleasing to see the increase in bookings with the 'End of Year' functions being held for the different businesses in our area.

Nov 16th:  Luminos Dentist - 20 odd people attended.
"  21st:  G J Gardiners - the biggest Corporate Event each year.  This year only 57 attended but still a very good return.
"  22nd:  Cook Brothers - 30 odd enjoyed our venue
"  23rd:  Aspiring Beginners - a small group (who played inside as Pennants was on), none of them had bowled before and they loved it!
"  28th:  Salvation Army - another small group who absolutely loved learning to play bowls
"  29th:  QLDC - Aqua Fit - 42 attended and supplied a lovely meal enjoyed by all.
"  30th:  Wanaka Hotel - 35 came, most had not played bowls before and they had a great day.
"  30th:  Power Sports - reduced numbers to the booking, but it didn't spoil their enjoyment, especially when Stoaker Room supplied their evening meal.

A HUGE thank you to all the 36 helpers/members (including the barmen) who gave of their time and experience.  (In order to keep this report edited, I haven't named members) but suffice to say, - there were many new helpers amongst the crew and they enjoyed themselves too! many making themselves available to help run Events in the future!
There are only 7 current Corporate Events booked for December.  (Some members are helping again during this month.)
Thank you, thank you and thank you again.  Much appreciated for the help and support towards our fundraising efforts.

Sevens Teams Played 30 November & 1 December

Mens Results

These were played over 3 Greens: The singles at Alexandra, pairs at ADC and fours at Clyde. Due to the number of teams entered this was divided into a two section round robin with the top two teams in each section going through to semi final and final. Our men's team finished 3rd in their round robin winning 10 out of their 15 games. In order to have qualified they would have done so by winning  only 2 more games. Interesting to note that the second qualifier in each section won their semi final and Arrowtown took out the final. (Arrowtown were in our mens section and qualified by only one more win. ) So arguably we were close!!!!

Womens Results

This was played on the beautiful Queenstown greens and was a straight round robin. We did not play our last tie because Arrowtown could not be beaten. Our women won 12 out of their 18 games and fared better than in recent years coming second overall. Arrowtown won 15 and drew 1.

Thanks to the Presbyterian Church who loaned us their community van for our travel. Thanks to Jan Allen who was our manger and Rhonda Hurley (our photographer, not pictured) who was the umpire for the tournament. Also thanks to our experienced van driver, Barbara L Wilson and Amy Swain for sorting our excellent accommodation at Pinewood Lodge.

Women's Triples Champions

Barb Wilson (s) Jenny Sawers and Heather Malcolm won the Club Championship triples on 25 November.

Runners Up were Rae Hammond, Jo Stock (s), and Pieta Shore

It was the first open club title for Barb and Jenny, and the first time in a final for Pieta. They play in the Champ of Champs 29th March at Patearoa.

Womens over 70s pairs tournament 27 November.

Congratulations Winners: Gaye Griffiths (s) and Kate Norman trophy presented by Jan Allan. Runners Up: Gina Campbell and Lynette Wells (s) presented by Lyn Leary. Thanks to our organisers and the lovely afternoon tea.

Purvis Cup 29 November

The Purvis Cup was played in perfect conditions after some rain which abated before 5pm which enabled us to play. We had 12 teams but everyone enjoyed the evening.  Three games of 6 ends were played with food being served after the 1st and 3rd games.
The winning team was Lindsay Jennings, Pauline Hope and Clive Kirkland.
The tournament was kindly sponsored by the Purvis Trust.

Nice one Wanaka Women.

We are so proud of our women, getting second to Roxburgh in the Forsyth Barr and Perseverance Wine Alexandra Challenge. None of our women played in all four matches but Helen Allison and Barb Wilson played all four matches with Jenni Burt and Kay Grandville in the Wanaclyde team. Pictured from left is Jenny Sawers, Margaret Parker, Kay Outram and Heather Malcolm. Heather Malcolm played skip in the fours as there were no brave volunteers and drew the match against a composite ADC Team.

Luminos had their Christmas function at our bowling club. They really got into the retro dressup theme. Don't they look fantastic! There is one of our ladies who remembers the era when whites were worn as well as classy blazers. Nice one Lumino.

Congratulations November Women's Ferns Winners

Suzanne Ewing, Kate Norman, Val Ransom, Julie Gillan

Lovely Smiles Girls

Jo Stock and Amy Swain won the Women's pairs Club Championship on November 14th.

The weather deteriorated through the day and the girls kindly discarded their layers to show off their matching tops for the photo.

They won in the final over Raewyn Hall(s) and Barb Wilson. Raewyn put on an accurate display of aggression, but it wasn't quite enough on the day.

Good luck Jo and Amy who now go on to play in the Centre Champ of Champs on the 23 March at Clyde.

Forty Years this November 2024

Congratulations to our life member Delma Guy who has been a member of Wanaka Bowling Club for forty years this month. Still playing splendid bowls at club and interclub and currently holds at least 28 club titles.  Delma has contributed in many other ways to our club and this is ongoing.

Continuing the Information Series about Bowls.

Additional to last newsletter,

  • Henselite have just brought out a new grip for their Dreamline XG model called "Series C" also deeper and easier to hold. At the moment it is a limited edition model.

  •  Drakes Pride are no longer making the deep channel grip. Their machine broke down and they are not replacing it.....

Do I really need more than 1 set? Information taken from Drakes Pride technical Information

In a word, yes. If you like narrow running bowls you will need an easy-play set for inferior or windy greens. If the only set you have is a wider draw set, competing against narrower models that play the weighted up-shot well is very difficult as the greens speeds up. It may play brilliantly on a 15-16 sec green but your options are restricted to only draw shots on a 19sec green. The new models are designed to give the same range of shot options as green speed get quicker.

Points to remember:
A  bowl is only "reading" the green and acting accordingly. Sometimes a wider draw set will go very narrow especially on a heavy or wet green and a narrower running model can sometimes have a lot more turn at the finish than it would on a hard and fast green. You may also experience a much wider draw on the forehand than normal and almost no draw on the backhand, usually caused by cross-wind and angles will change playing from the other direction. Various playing surfaces can have your bowls doing something different to normal when they are heavy.

Changing to a narrow running model that simply cannot work due to the inherent design flaw. They require perfect greens, no wind and very consistent delivery with no wobble, many players deliver from a greater height as they age or pay little attention to the way the bowl arrives onto the green. Older, wider drawing sets, and balanced sole type are much more forgiving than the recent models that have a high degree of un-balance on the sole to achieve the narrow path on the green but still have full legal bias on the table. Any model that goes more than about 10% narrower than 1.75 mtrs of draw on 17sec green is employing greater amounts of the un-balanced sole design and will not play consistently in this country.

Missing usually makes the player adjust the line on the next delivery which switches back to normal and again has the bowl finishing on the other side of the head in the wrong place. Players are making line changes based on where the last bowl finished and in this example line direction was never the problem, it's green conditions or non-vertical delivery angle that's giving different bias percentage on different deliveries. Delivery angle, any wobble, green quality, grass type and especially windy weather conditions have a marked effect on this bias-subtraction bowl type. Although very poorly performing, we can make bowls that go almost straight on the green and it's reasonable to assume the game is easier to play with very narrow running bowls. Not true, they come with "strings attached" having their own set of difficulities due to the design flaw that cannot be overcome and generally play much better indoors.

Great TV Watch

28th November 2024: World Champion of Champions Singles- from the Browns Bay Bowling Club, Auckland, New Zealand. Aiden Takarua (NZ) v  Lee Schraner (Aust) Click here

Note that this was not the final but in the earlier rounds. These two men played off again in the World singles final.

WANTED MORE MEN'S PHOTOS.

If there are any men who would like me to help them take nice bowling photos on their phone and then learn how to email them to me please let me know. I will come along to the club anytime and talk you through it, several times if necessary until you can do it. Email me at publicity.wanakabowls@gmail.com

Also if you would like a little help learning how to use bowls hub I can do that too. There are some tutorials made by Bowls NZ uploaded onto Central Otago Bowls. Just follow the link on the home page but if that is too quick for you let me know.

Same for women however, as you can see, this month is full of women's faces.
