The annual men’s bowling tournament hosted by the Wānaka Bowling Club was a big success. The tournament held on 7/8 January attracted a full field of 16 teams with players coming from throughout the South Island.

After two days of intense competition, the final was played between two Wānaka  teams with the team of Murray Finn, Stuart Hurley, Gavin McDonald, and John Leith beating the team of Simon Nyhof, Ken Allison, Brett Simpson, and Ken Wills by 14-11.

“We are fortunate to have seen games of a very high quality,” the Vice President Ewan Miller said. “This tournament is a highlight of our year, and we are proud of the quality of bowls played.”

The plate competition was also won by a Wānaka team of Bruce Robertson, Eion Willis, Ross Niles, ad Ken Muir who beat a Queenstown team of Bill Grant, Maurice Keith, Ross Heron, and Alan Brown 13-7.

The tournament’s major sponsors were McIvor Plumbing and Rockgas.

The Wānaka Bowling Club now has a membership of 150 members, and has experienced growth in membership this year. “We are always keen to attract new members,” Ewan said. “Bowls nowadays is a sport for all ages,” he concluded.

Val Ransom and Ewan Millar Tournament Secretary and Controllers have added:

This year’s Men’s Classic Fours was very successful which was attributed to all the assistance given.  From the beautifully groomed green, wonderful raffles available, bar staff but special mention must be made to Rhonda with the wonderful organisation of the food which was outstanding.  Her many helpers both in the kitchen and especially those who supplied a wonderful array of  food made Rhonda’s job so much easier. The players kept making comment on the standard of the food our club supplies.  Well done everyone.

The Club’s new BBQ was again put to good use on Monday afternoon for the final Men’s Club day of the year.

High class cuisine was on offer though the absence of sausages did provoke some comment.

After the lunch, the inclement weather forced the players inside for the usual two closely-contested matches. Phil Studholme skipped the winning team, together with Gary our South African visitor and Peter Herbert.

Up to 30 men attend the regular Monday afternoon which is organised by Alister Moore and Derek Hope
