Exciting Times  article for the Wanaka Sun

A good season for the Wānaka Bowling Club has just got better.
Pip Kiddey took out the Central Otago women’s centre singles title that was played last Sunday, 2 February, at the Alexandra District Club.

This notable win for Kiddey and the Wānaka Club is the first time that a Wānaka player has won the singles title since Rhonda Hurley won in 2014. Rhonda commented that, “Pip had a great weekend winning all of her qualifying games, and she is a very worthy winner of the title”. Kiddey beat JaneAnderson from the  Queenstown club 21-17 in a high-quality final that was watched by a big crowd on a very warm afternoon.

Kiddey will now represent Central Otago at the New Zealand championships to be played in Auckland in mid-July.

The win for Kiddey followed the earlier success of Jo Stock and Kim Tilly, also of the Wānaka club, who won the Central Otago women’s pairs title last October.

The Wānaka club had 4 women competitors in the event, reflecting the strength of the local club. All local players competed well in a competition that was notable for a number of new players.

AROUND CENTRAL OTAGO

Continuing our journey around the bowling clubs in our district, let's visit the Arrowtown club, an easy 45 minute trip over the Crown Range. This is a well-established club sitting in a beautifully sheltered position alongside the local swimming pool and fire station and the club is renowned for its "fast" green.

The Club has almost 80 members and the pleasant clubrooms are well used by the local community for gatherings and functions. The Club's raffles are well known for the quality of the prizes.

It's a strong playing club as well with Allan Brash holding 11 Centre titles and Diane Brash has five titles. Kelvin Jackson has 5 titles while Debbie Jackson has 7 titles. This year the men won the fours: Peter Dunne, Grant Hammond, Allan Brash, Peter Bain. The women won the Interclub 7's for the second consecutive year and the men also won the 7's after being runner up last year.

As with Cromwell, the Club always flies the New Zealand flag on tournament days. As well as helping to gauge the  wind direction, a vexillogist will say that there is "nothing sadder" than a flagpole with no flag flying.

KNOW YOUR LAWS

In a recent Wednesday afternoon Men's pennants game at Arrowtown, Terry Outram and Ian Hall were leading the Hawea team 6-5. As time was almost up on the clock, Terry placed the mat but the jack had NOT been thrown when the buzzer sounded. The Hawea skip, a vastly experienced bowler and a currently accredited umpire, insisted that the mat had been placed so the game was still live and that the end must therefore be played, despite the buzzer having sounded and the jack NOT being thrown. Was the Hawea skip right and, as Hawea scored two points and "won" 7-6, were Terry and Ian robbed of a win?

In the Umpires Hub Bowls NZ it states the game commences with the delivery of the jack.

Another question people ask is about the Date Stamp

World bowls request all bowls manufactured to be stamped. Bowls can be disallowed for play if the date stamp is expired. (showing earlier than the current year) BUT this is only for games under the control of World Bowls.

NZ Bowls domestic regulations allows for bowls to be used 1982 or later.
