Winter 2024 Newsletter Number 3. 9th September

 Dear Members,

Changes to Men's Club Champs

This year, we're shaking things up!

We're planning to play more of the men's club championship games on a single day. By doing this, we hope to encourage more teams to enter and make the event even more competitive and fun. Now’s the time to start thinking about forming your teams and getting involved!

New Mixed Pairs Championship

We're thrilled to announce the addition of a mixed pairs category to the club championships this year. This is a fantastic opportunity to mix up your game and play alongside a partner of the opposite gender. We hope this new format will attract a wide range of participants. Who will be the first pair to get their names on the honours board?

Reminder: Submit Your Entries

Don't forget to submit your entries for both the men's club champs and mixed pairs. Sign up sheets are in the Shed by the green.

Pennants Season Starts in October

Pennants season kicks off at the beginning of October! Remember, for Saturday pennants, please put your name up on the board by Wednesday each week, and for Wednesday pennants, ensure your name is up by Monday.

Let’s get ready for a great season ahead – see you on the greens!

 Best regards,

Men’s Match Committee

August Corporate Bowls

13th August; Te Anau Club came  to play on our artificial green which they wanted experience having just having one installed at their Club.  A wonderful afternoon was had by all who joined in and the Te Anau Club extended an invitation to our Club to have a reciprocal visit to them. We look forward to that.

28th Aug:  GM Building bought 25 employees and Contractors along as a send-off celebration for one of their staff. We all got to enjoy the bowling, the drinks and Gourmet Pizzas. Thank you to Lyn Leary & Jenny Sawers as my steady helpers.

Interest for Corporate Bookings are now increasing with the Xmas planning now being a focus. Let's hope we make up for lost income from the past few months.

The Studholme Trophy, now in its 18th year, is a prestigious competition at the Wanaka Bowls Club, named in honour of Neil Studholme. This year’s event spanned 12 weeks of intense competition, culminating in a thrilling final between Albert Town and Aubrey, two neighbouring suburbs. The final, held on Saturday 24 August, was a game of 20 ends, with Albert Town surging ahead 17-3 by the halfway mark. Most spectators expected Aubrey to concede, but to everyone’s delight, Aubrey staged a remarkable comeback, leading 20-19 going into the final end. Holding three, they were just one bowl away from victory when Richie Muir of Albert Town, with his last bowl, drew the Jack, levelling the score at 20-all. An extra end was required to break the tie. Albert Town clinched the win with a single shot, emerging as the deserved champions. The match was a fantastic display of skill and determination by both teams, providing a fitting end to another great season. Phil Studholme, Neil’s son and a keen bowler, was there to witness this thrilling conclusion, adding a personal connection to the legacy of the trophy.

The matches between Beacon Point vs Hawea Gold, for 3rd and 4th places, final score was 15-14 to Hawea Gold after being “neck and neck” until the 11th end when Hawea who were ahead 8-6 got a 4 making the score 12-6 to them. The next two ends Beacon Point crept up by 2 points each end, then edged ahead on end 14 scoring 4 to lead 14-12. End 15, the final end, Hawea scored 3 to win 15-14.

Coming Up on TV

Bowls New Zealand are excited to announce a new televised league, Bowls5.

Bowls5 is a high level invitational singles league being produced by Bowls New Zealand, and broadcast on Sky Sport NZ and the Bowls New Zealand YouTube Channel every Tuesday and Wednesday night from 630pm-9.00pm over a four week period from the 16th of September through to the 9th of October.

Three of the six players have won the World Championship Singles, and five of the six players have won their National Singles Championship.

The players are: Gary Kelly (Northern Ireland), Ryan Bester (Canada), Shannon McIlroy (New Zealand), Katelyn Inch (New Zealand), Selina Goddard (New Zealand) and Tayla Bruce (New Zealand) The players will contest a double round robin over the course of the series, with their overall seedings deciding where they sit on the ''finals night''- when the inaugural Bowls5 winner will be crowned.
